The Tattooist

"One of the standout elements is the film score by New Zealand composer Peter Scholes, who maintains an effective musical sound design, incorporating found sound as well as music derived from Samoan traditions to create a splendid sense of unease and also provide a recurring ostinato of horror throughout the film."

The Tattooist

"She rides down to the docks in a chariot (jet-propelled by Peter Scholes’ exhilarating, Force of Destiny-laden score). She engages there the assistance of Lawrence, a penniless out-of-work hunk with a shady past and a fetching pout. Has this Boadicea met her match? Will the hireling’s persistent smoulder melt her sang froid? Meanwhile Anne, her dark, enigmatic confidante and companion, hatches schemes of her own…” — Bill Gosden, New Zealand Film Festivals, 1993

The famous incident in 1932 in which union leader Jimmy Edwards was batoned to the ground by police forms the focus of a new local drama, seen through the eyes of Edward’s 13 year old son James who watched his father’s collapse from just metres away.” throng.co.nz 2008

HINEKARO GOES ON A PICNIC AND BLOWS UP ANOTHER OBELISK

Composer Peter Scholes
Music for the short film based on a short story by Keri Hulme
Directed by Christine Parker

The Tattooist
This short, written and directed by Christine Parker (Channelling Baby) takes an allegorical look at the creative process. A writer (Rima Te Wiata) has a korero with a trickster spirit guide Hinekaro (voiced by Rena Owen), and conjures worlds from the words she inks on a page. In her imaginative struggles she’s visited by a ruru owl and her younger self, and other creatures are brought strikingly to life via special effects. Hinekaro was adapted from a 1991 short story by Booker Prize-winner Keri Hulme.
